Dropping temperatures mean your skin needs an extra bit of TLC to keep it well hydrated. But forget reapplying face cream every hour – while moisturising does matter, there are simpler, more effective ways to get the job done.

You know its winter when suddenly your skin feels drier than ever (and it’s impossible to leave the warm shower).

Don’t worry, you’re not imagining it.

Officially called xerosis, dry skin can occur for a whole range of reasons – everything from age and medications to genetics, and environmental factors can play a big role, too. And it can definitely be more common in winter. Why? It turns out being exposed to the combination of cold air outside and warm, heated air inside causes the skin to lose moisture pretty quickly, mainly due to the fact that those winter conditions equal low humidity.

But enough about causes – what you really want to know is what to do about it, right? Here’s what can help.

Firm up your daily regime.

Before venturing out into the cold for treatments, adopt some that are designed especially for home use. That should include using O Cosmedics’s products day and night, helping to revivify your skin and keep it summer fresh, even through the cool months. Corrective Cleanser & Peel or 3 in 1 Fruit Peel Mask – which will clear blocked pores and prevent winter breakouts – that you should use two or three times a week. A cleanser with attitude! Powered by V8 Peptide Complex®, award-winning actives, L-Lactic and encapsulated Salicylic Acids to gently purify, exfoliate, rebalance and decongest the skin. Put hyaluronic acid to work.

Found naturally in the deeper layers of the skin, hyaluronic acid, employed in a serum, can help to restore vital moisture and hydration thanks to the way it supports the formation and maintenance of collagen. A protein that’s one of the main building blocks of skin, collagen is what provides that plump, hydrated appearance. Use it morning and night after you’ve cleansed and before applying other skincare.

In other words, add some treatments to your skincare routine. Allure’s HydraFacial/Hydrodermabrasion and O Cosmedics Peel are perfect for keeping your skin hydrated this winter. While the HydraFacial involves three steps – cleanse and peel, extract and hydrate, and fuse and protect – and takes just 45 minutes, the Enzyme Peel is gentle, nourishing and designed to deliver a hit of intense hydration. Just what you need to get through the cold days with light and bright skin.

While getting one HydraFacial a month is recommended to maintain your skin’s moisture, having a peel every two to four weeks will help your skin stay as well hydrated as possible this season.

To get the most suitable skincare and treatments for your skin type, it’s best to talk to an expert to understand your skin’s needs, particularly as the weather gets colder. Allure Aesthetics Clinic offer free skin and treatment consultations.

And a few things to avoid:

Go soap free. This is really important when you’re trying to keep your skin as hydrated as possible, including the skin on your face. Soap is another thing that saps the moisture from skin, so stick with soap-free cleansers and washes.

Pat your skin dry. Doing this rather than rubbing or drying it vigorously will help ensure there’s still some moisture left on the skin. And avoid scrubbing your skin with a washcloth to clean it and remove cleansers, too.
